This article summarizes the major dimensions of "rurality" and significant recent changes in the political, economic, and social composition of rural life. It then examines the origins of these changes, their impact on future directions of rural society, and the implications of this for collecting of sources for the study of rural life, with some description of available sources and discussion of unmet collecting needs.
