The education and development of preservation administrators is an important issue for archivists. The Preservation Management Institute (PMI), a pilot project cosponsored by the Society of American Archivists and the North East Document Conservation Center in 1987, is a training alternative that should be continued. A two-week intensive training experience for managers with an aptitude and responsibility for preservation, the PMI could be of significant benefit to institutions that are committed to a rational program of preservation management. The South Carolina Department of Archives and History sponsored one of the students at PMI, and as a result the preservation program has expanded and shows promise of greater improvement.
