A holdings maintenance program uses a range of simple, basic preservation procedures to improve the housing and storage environment for archival records on an institution-wide basis and, in the process, to defer or eliminate the need for individualized conservation attention. This paper describes the steps necessary to establish an effective systematic holdings maintenance program. It covers the knowledge-gathering and planning that takes place during the initial stages of a new program and the more specific planning that is undertaken when individual holdings maintenance projects are being developed.
