The Speeches series of the Senator Strom Thurmond Collection contains over 100 cubic feet of material spanning more than 50 years of public service. Because of the need for improved access, the Special Collections Unit and the Cataloging Unit of the Clemson University Libraries initiated the Thurmond Speeches Indexing Project, using the AMC MARC format to index the series. In this article, the authors describe the planning and implementation of the project and discuss some of the lessons learned, as well as future developments that might occur in the index.
