Hopefully all attendees, especially the first-time attendees, will leave here feeling they are part of a worldwide network of friends and colleagues. However, it is important to remember that inclusion in this network includes responsibilities as well as benefits. Drs. Ray Bankowski and Ben Pomeroy and the program committee for the 1st International Symposium on Avian Influenza (ISAI) established specific objectives for this series of symposia (Proceedings of the 1st ISAI, April 22–24, 1981, p. vii). With slight modifications and updating, these objectives served us well for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and now the 5th ISAI.

Based on the specific objectives, our network serves several general functions. First, it facilitates the worldwide distribution of new knowledge about avian influenza.
