Dr. Charles E. Whiteman died September 30, 2009 in Manhattan, Kansas. He was born in Eldred (Greene County), Illinois on September 30, 1918 and raised in Carrollton, Illinois. After completing his pre-veterinary studies at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, he earned his DVM at Kansas State in 1943. He served 3 years in the Army Air Corps and was discharged at the rank of Captain. He returned to his home town of Carrollton where he was in general veterinary practice for 11 years. Following his dream of a career in teaching, he pursued graduate training in veterinary pathology at Iowa State University, completing requirements for the Ph.D. degree in 1960. He served on the faculty at Michigan State University for 2 years before accepting a professorship at Colorado State University from which he retired in 1984.
