New AAMI Chair Aims to Keep Membership Active, Involved
Bob Stiefel, CCE, believes his substantial involvement with AAMI over the years has been a major factor in the successful clinical engineering career he has enjoyed, now with the University of Maryland Medical Center and previously with Johns Hopkins Hospital. It's no surprise that he sees keeping AAMI's membership involved in the association's activities as a key priority during his term as chair.
“Clinical engineering is a support group for the hospital as a whole. AAMI has a similarly broad focus, providing support to manufacturers, regulators, users, and researchers,” he explains. Stiefel says he is committed to making sure AAMI's members get their money's worth from their membership dues. “I want to look for ways to improve what we do, to ensure that our members always get the education, training, networking opportunities, and experiences they need to grow.”
Device Industry Getting a Jump on New Electrical Equipment Standard
A number of medical device manufacturers, industry consultants, and other interested parties are already getting a head start on incorporating ANSI/AAMI ES60601-1:2005—the groundbreaking new medical electrical equipment standard—into their business operations. It is expected that regulators and certification bodies will begin requiring that products be certified to the new standard sometime in 2008. Manufacturers are using this time to become familiar with the new standard, which AAMI released in March, and to begin shifting new products and existing designs toward compliance with it.
