It is with a heavy heart that I write about the death of Dr. Shannon P. Pratt. Dr. Pratt is known as the “Godfather of Valuation” and author of Valuing a Business: The Analysis and Appraisal of Closely-Held Companies, originally published in 1981 and commonly considered the “Valuation Bible.” Dr. Pratt was the Chairman and CEO of Shannon Pratt Valuations, Inc. in Portland, Oregon. Before that, he co-founded Willamette Management Associates. He graduated from the University of Washington with an undergrad in business administration and also received a doctorate in business administration, majoring in finance, from Indiana University. In addition to his many other credentials and memberships, he was a fellow and lifetime member of the American Society of Appraisers.
