Like many good works, this one has had a fairly long gestation. It comes 22 years after the publication of Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern in California, by Mark Jennings and Marc Hayes (1994). The earlier edition was the first detailed conservation status report for California herpetofauna, synthesizing published research but also incorporating information from personal interviews and other unpublished contributions. As such, it was a treasure trove of interesting natural history and distributional information. The 1994 report, often referred to simply as “Jennings and Hayes,” became an essential resource for public agency biologists and environmental consulting firms.
