My research spans from fish populations and assemblages to artisanal fisheries. In 1992, for my undergraduate research, I studied fish diversity in the floating macrophytes of the Amazon River. During that time, I had the chance to study the fish community and observe the dynamics of ornamental fisheries in these riverine habitats. Then in 1998, using knowledge from fishermen and a fish assemblage monitoring strategy, I had the opportunity to predict the changes in fish assemblages and fisheries that could result from the proposed construction of a dam on the Sogamoso River, a major tributary of the Magdalena River in the northwestern Andes.
