George Jacobs, Managing Editor of Copeia from 1966 to 1972 and Herpetology Editor from 1978 to 1981, died in San Diego, California, on 24 December 2003 while traveling. He was 86. Jacobs became a life member of ASIH in 1955 and remained dedicated to the study of reptiles and amphibians until his death (Fig. 1).
George was born on 28 August 1917, in New York City. He earned his B.S. from the University of Mississippi in 1940 and then served in World War II, in both the 8th and 9th Divisions of the Army Air Corps.
In 1947, he earned his M.S. in zoology at the University of West Virginia. While working on his degree, George met Graham Netting and discovered the world of eastern plethodontid salamanders, the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains and, hence, herpetology.
