Donald Perrin de;thSylva passed away from a heart attack on 28 January 2004 at age 75 in Brooksville, Florida, after retiring from a long and distinguished career on the faculty of the Rosensteil School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami. Don was born in Rochester, New York, and received his B.S. at Cornell University in 1952, his M.S. at the University of Miami in 1953 under Luis Rivas, and his Ph.D. from Cornell in 1958 under Edward C. Raney. He also attended Northwestern University (1948–1950) as an undergrad and UCLA (1953–1954) as a graduate student. Prior to college he served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division in the Philippines, Okinawa, and Korea.
