The result of observations in the investigation of valve stem pitting during storage after hydrostatic testing was that the presence of soluble corrosive agents in the asbestos braid and graphite lubricant were responsible for the condition. Various packing treatments, graphites, sacrificial elements and inhibitors were formulated or chosen and tests conducted at three locations using Type 416 stem material. Test results indicate that removal of soluble corrosive constituents, incorporation of inhibitors or sacrificial elements and careful selection of graphite dry lubricant in the packing manufacture are beneficial and necessary.
