Abstract
The intermetallic compounds of beryllium with the transition elements were surveyed for potential as high-temperature materials in aerospace applications. Beryllides from fifteen binary and three ternary systems were examined for oxidation resistance. Oxidation data in the temperature range from 2300 to 3000 F (1260 to 1649 C) are given for CrBe2, CrBe12, (Gd, Zr) Be13, (Hf, Zr)Be13, Hf2Be17, Hf2Be21, MoBe12, Nb2Be17, NbBe12, TaBe3, Ta2Be17, TaBe12, TiBe2, TiBe12, (U, Zr)Be13, WBe22, Zr2Be17 and ZrBe13, As GdBe13 was not oxidation resistant in this temperature range, oxidation data for this compound are given for 1800 and 2000 F (982 to 1093 C).
Other compounds which were judged not to possess sufficient oxidation resistance at 2300 F to warrant consideration for high-temperature applications in an oxidizing atmosphere include CeBe13, HfBe13, LaBe13, MoBe2, NbBe2, NbBe3, TaBe2, ThBe13, UBe13, WBe2, WBe12, ZrBe5 and the beryllides of Pd, Pt and V.
