The corrosion of rare earth metals in air, water, and aqueous solutions at different temperatures has been measured by conventional weight loss and weight gain tests. The metals oxidize slowly in air, corrode slowly in water and alkaline solutions, and are readily soluble in most acids.

Correlations of corrosion behavior with the electronic and physical properties of the rare earths are discussed.
