A study of the fracture of tarnish films on a 70/30 brass in pH 7.2 Mattsson's solution reveals that the film fractures transgranularly. Stressed metal specimens in the same solution crack intergranularly. The results are in disagreement with the reputed tarnish film rupture mechanism.
