Erosive wear of advanced ceramics and cemented carbides was evaluated in a coal-slurry jet test that simulates the conditions in letdown valves in liquefaction plants. The results indicate that some ceramics, notably those based on SiC, possess superior wear resistance as compared to the cemented carbides. The paper discusses the influence of the microstructures and the physical properties of the target materials on their relative susceptibility to erosive wear.
