A scanning reference electrode (SRE) was constructed using an X-Y recorder to position the electrode. A computer was used to control the recorder and to acquire data. The data can be displayed in tabulated form or as a 3-dimensional plot. The plot can be rotated by 180 degrees to view hidden data points, if necessary. The system was tested on N-80 steel and on a welded joint between N-80 and 4140 steel. Studies designed to determine the optimal height of the salt bridge tip above the sample and the optimal scan rate were performed.
