Abstract
The present experimental work demonstrated that stray AC can pass through the internal corrosion product within bolted lap joints of low-alloy steel. Thus, electrolytic reactions within the corrosion products can accelerate corrosion within the joints. Polarization resistance measurements in the present study revealed an increase in corrosion rate within joint segments resulting from AC. Both the increase in corrosion rate and a negative shift in corrosion potential suggest depolarization of the anodic reaction by AC. Joints with sufficiently thick members and closely set bolts have sufficient strength to resist distortion by corrosion products, but they do not entirely prevent internal joint corrosion.
