Abstract
Hydrogen permeation tests were carried out on supermartensitic stainless steel membranes under cathodic protection conditions in ASTM seawater. In contrast to other observations, only a modest reduction in hydrogen uptake due to calcareous scale was observed after 75 days of exposure. In view of the variable results for this alloy and for carbon steels, it would be prudent not to rely on any beneficial impact of calcareous scale on hydrogen uptake.
