The results of field immersion exposures of a selected group of welded and bare uncoupled ferrous and non-ferrous metals in Isthmian fresh, brackish, and sea waters for durations of one, three, and five years are presented by this report and its appendix. The tests which were initiated in 1941 and completed in 1946 were conducted especially to obtain urgently needed information regarding the corrodibility of various basic and special purpose metals required by The Panama Canal for the maintenance of existing facilities and for additional facilities proposed for early construction. Results of the one year exposures were used as proximate information for the preparation of specifications for metal equipment for the proposed new locks and other metal structures planned under the Third Locks Project. The complete results made available in this report should provide useful general information, for other purposes.
