Welcome to the Research Technical Symposium (RTS) special issue of CORROSION.
In 2014, the RTS was dedicated to “Corrosion and Protection of Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys.”
The RTS is the annual symposium organized by the NACE research committee (along with the Research in Progress Symposia), with a focus on topical issues of present scientific significance.
Whilst the issue of magnesium durability has remained a challenge facing corrosion science and engineering for about a century, the issue remains increasingly important in the present era and immediate future, given the increased industrial usage of magnesium (almost doubling in the last decade alone). This increased usage is driven by the rising costs of energy, the need for lightweighting/reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and consumer expectation of lightweight portable electronics.
The presentations at the RTS were all invited contributions, with the speakers spanning 4 continents and including government (Army, Oak Ridge National Lab),...
