The corrosion of galvanized steel in solutions of ethylene glycol containing borax is found to increase with decreasing temperature. This is believed to be due to the formation of a soluble complex zinc salt, the stability of which is greater the lower the temperature, which prevents the formation of a barrier film of insoluble corrosion product. Cadmium, magnesium and brass are attacked at low temperature in glycol-borax solution by the same mechanism, as is zinc in solutions of glycol containing sodium acetate or sodium benzoate.
