As we approach the end of another year, we want to thank our authors, reviewers, and readers for your continued support of CORROSION journal. Your collaboration has enabled us to continue producing a high-quality journal each month. We are excited to share the highlights of the past year with you and look forward to continuing to bring you more content in the coming year.
We published several special issues and collections this year. We published a special issue, “New Approaches to Life Prediction,”1 in March, which was based on research presented at AMPP 2022’s Research Topical Symposium. Our collection titled “Environment-Induced Crack Initiation and Early Stages of Crack Growth in Aluminum Alloys” was published as part of the January2 and August3 issues. CORROSION also published a collection titled “Corrosion of Reinforced Concrete Structures (in Memoriam of Prof. Jose Antonio Gonzalez)” as part of the April4 and July5 issues of the journal. We will have more special issues, sections, and collections in 2024!
In addition to special issues and collections, CORROSION published an open access invited critical review, “A Review of the Governing Factors in Pit-to-Crack Transitions of Metallic Structures,”6 by R.M. Katona, E.K. Karasz, and R.F. Schaller in January’s issue. We also added a new invited-only article type, called Perspectives. These opinion-based pieces lean on published data to provide a discussion on the current or future state of the topic at hand. We launched these with a thought-provoking piece coauthored by our Technical Editor in Chief, Dr. John Scully, and one of our Associate Editors, Dr. Ingrid Milošev. Their perspective, “Challenges for the Corrosion Science, Engineering, and Technology Community as a Consequence of Growing Demand and Consumption of Materials: A Sustainability Issue,”7 delves into the unsustainable growing demand for metallic materials and places a call to the corrosion community to contribute to a circular sustainable economy. We look forward to bringing you more invited perspectives in 2024 and the years to come.
Along with our monthly issues, we have published a number of podcast episodes during 2023. These have discussed a wide range of topics, from pitting and cracking to peer-review week. Our most listened to episode was “Editor Roundtable Part 1: State of Corrosion Research,”8 which featured a discussion on trends in corrosion research with the Technical Editors and Editor in Chiefs of four journals: Drs. Arjan Mol (Corrosion Science), Nick Birbilis (Materials Degradation), Sanna Virtanen (Journal of the Electrochemical Society), and CORROSION’s own John Scully. This stimulating discussion continued in a second episode that focused on the future of corrosion research. We look forward to continuing CORROSION’s podcasts in 2024 and will be starting the year with a “Corrosion & Health” series.
