Nick Birbilis, FNACE
Dr. Nick Birbilis is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment at Deakin University in Victoria, Australia. In his 20+ year career to date, he has worked in numerous fields of corrosion, including monitoring, remediation, life prediction, asset design, durability management planning, and development of corrosion resistant materials. Dr. Birbilis has had responsibility for large research teams and significant management experience, including serving as head of department at Monash University.
He received his B.Eng. and Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Monash University. Dr. Birbilis serves as an editor for Electrochimica Acta, CORROSION, and NPJ Materials Degradation. He is the youngest recipient of the NACE Fellow award, and is also a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society. He has received the H.H. Uhlig Award and CORROSION Best Paper Award from NACE, the Tall Poppy Science Award from the Australian Institute of Policy and Science, the T.P. Hoar Award from the Institute of Corrosion, the Lee Hsun Lecture Award from the Institute of Metals Research, and the Batterham Medal from the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
Research Interests: alloy design (development of corrosion resistant alloy development), additive manufacturing and 3D printing of metals, functional corrosion resistant coatings, computational materials science, metallic biomaterials
