Carpenter et al. (2019) described Chartergellus trinitatis Carpenter & Andena, 2019 as a new species found on Trinidad Island. The new species was noteworthy for its distinctive taxonomic characteristics and unique nest structure when compared to other species within the genus Chartergellus. Subsequent analysis of these distinctions has led to the conclusion that Chartergellus trinitatis matches the “morph” laticincta (Ducke) of Pseudopolybia compressa (de Saussure, 1854). Below the synonymy is presented.
From the morphological phylogenetic analyzes by Carpenter (1991), Wenzel and Carpenter (1994) to the combined phylogenies of Menezes et al. (2020) and Noll et al. (2020), Chartergellus Bequaert, 1938 and Pseudopolybia von Dalla Torre, 1894 are recovered as part of a monophyletic group, sharing a curved bristle on the third labial palpomere. Richards (1978), Carpenter (2004), Somavilla and Carpenter (2021) differentiate the genera by the fact that Pseudopolybia has a dorsal groove on the...
