It will probably be a surprise to many to learn that William Smith had any connection with the United States or with Americans, but in fact he made the acquaintance of two well-known American geologists and another American became a subscriber to his geological map (1815). He also received the offer of a post as canal engineer in North Carolina, an offer which his friends persuaded him to decline.
