The process of gathering and preparing articles for a special issue is an undertaking much akin to the historian's fishing expedition. For this special issue on education and history in the United States, we cast our nets in that part of the sea where the two areas of study intersect and sought material on the history of education,on education as part of history, on history as part of education, and, finally,on the education of history—that is, how the experience of historians in education has informed the discipline of history.
