The Herpetologists’ League is pleased to announce that the 2024 recipient of the Award for Distinguished Service to Herpetology is Dr. Richard A. Griffiths. Dr Griffiths was born and raised in London and attended university there for both his BSc and PhD degrees. His doctorate was carried out under the supervision of John Cloudsley-Thompson at Birkbeck College, where behavioural experiments on salamanders and newts were carried out in enclosures on the roof within sight of some notable London landmarks. His interest in herpetology was further stimulated by attending the Tuesday evening meetings of the British Herpetological Society which were held in the august meeting rooms of the Linnaean Society in Piccadilly. It was after one such meeting that guest speaker Paul Gittins – then a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology – invited Richard to join the amphibian ecology group at a small field...
