In a recent series of papers(1-3) reporting a study of attempted suicide, a number of observations were made which suggested the advisability of reexamining certain of the relationships between social factors and mental illness. In this paper1 such reexamination will be undertaken. It will also be pointed out that attempted suicide and successful suicide are excellent focal points for the study of the relations between culture and mental disorder.
