One of the important concerns of the humanist throughout the modern era has been with the psychological condition of the worker in the routine, mindless, jobs of industry and of the paper-work bureaucracies. Professor Kornhauser, in this work, has contributed significantly to understanding the attitudes, mental health and strivings of the worker in the still important, mass production segment of our laboring world. In presenting a statistical portrait of the Detroit factory worker in the 1950's he not only wishes to address himself to the fellow social scientist but also to all thoughtful citizens concerned with wise social policy affecting the welfare of working people.
