As Editor-in-Chief of International Surgery, I take this opportunity to address the role and relationship of International Surgery, the official Journal of the International College of Surgeons, in the global scientific and medical publishing industry and the World Health Organization (WHO). The International College of Surgeons was founded in 1935. International Surgery has been published for eighty-four years, beginning in 1938. The World Health Organization was initially established in 1948. The International College of Surgeons has been in official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Non-State Actor (NSA) for 40-plus years.
The vision of International Surgery is to publish and disseminate new knowledge gained from scientific and medical research on a worldwide basis. Our global strategy is to ethically function in accord with the highest peer review and publishing standards, and thereby attract high quality manuscripts from all countries, followed by the global dissemination of such information. The International College of Surgeons fundamental strategy of providing humanitarian surgical care to all parts of the world is in agreement with the World Health Organization mission of providing health care to all, not just a few.
