Abstract
Since 2015, important lessons have been learned as to what is necessary to provide:
Tier 3 oiled wildlife response services globally, and
Tier 1 and Tier 2 preparedness requirements to ensure effective response.
Although the Global Oiled Wildlife Response System (GOWRS) is now providing an assessment team service through OSRL, this does not eliminate the need for industry and other stakeholders to invest in wildlife preparedness, including Tier 1 and 2 responders.
Here, we illustrate the distinct advantages of:
developing local/regional preparedness, through collaborative working, to ensure effective response including those activities that must subsequently occur for success and the benefits to industry that can be realized in its deployment;
Commissioning a complete oiled wildlife assessment at the start of a major incident, using the GOWRS-led assessment service as an example of a professionally-led assessment effort.
