The cover photo views Tu Hien inlet from a southwestward direction. Tu Hien inlet is located centrally along the Vietnamese coast in the province of Thua Thien-Hue. When open, Tu Hien inlet is one of two inlets connecting the internally connected Tam Giang and Cau Hai lagoons to the South China Sea. The back barrier bay is the Cau Hai lagoon, which occupies half the area of the 220-km2-lagoon system. The combination of a microtidal regime and a strong longshore transport forces the inlet to close seasonally when river discharges in the lagoon are low. The climate in this area is dominated by tropical monsoons with two main seasons alternatingly favoring sea wind waves or river inflows.
