Reefscape, Palm Beach County, Florida. This panoramic view of Horseshoe Reef, in Palm Beach County, Florida, illustrates the colorful and diverse reef life thriving there. The reef lies offshore of the Town of Palm Beach in approximately 12–18 m of water, and supports a myriad of benthic organisms including stony corals such as Montastrea cavernosa and Meandrina meandrites, octocorals such as Iciligorgia schrammi, and numerous sponge species (the giant barrel sponge Xestospongia muta and green finger sponge Iotrochota birotulata can be seen in the lower right-hand corner of the image). Reef fish are abundant here, especially near the steep ledges (∼3 m) around the perimeter of the reef. We observed several adult loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) coming to the surface to breathe, and we were fortunate to witness a large individual resting on the reef itself.
