This Special Issue of the Journal of Coastal Research, entitled “Pontchartrain Basin Restoration and Research,” is dedicated to Dr. Patrick “Shea” Penland, former director of the University of New Orleans Pontchartrain Institute for Environmental Sciences and chairman of the UNO Earth and Environmental Sciences Department. Dr. Penland passed away suddenly on March 25, 2008, at the young age of 54. Although he was a native Floridian, his graduate studies at Louisiana State University entrenched him in coastal Louisiana. The Mississippi delta plain became his home and preserving it became his life's passion.

Dr. Penland was a prolific researcher and studied coastal systems throughout the world, including the Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, the Great Lakes, the U.S. Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and the North Sea.
