Effective on January 1, 2017, the Journal of Food Protection moved from Ingenta Connect to a new web platform at http://jfoodprotection.org. This transition included updates to editorial content and production workflow. In addition, metadata was enhanced and new services such as Kudos, Altmetric, and ORCID were adopted.

Volume 80 of the Journal of Food Protection, published in 2017, contained 2,152 pages and 265 articles, which included 255 research papers and notes, and 10 mini-review, review, and general interest papers (Table 1). By comparison, Volume 79 published in 2016 contained 2,224 pages and 275 articles, which included 263 research papers and notes, and 12 mini-review, review, and general interest papers. Thus, Volume 80 contained 10 fewer articles than Volume 79.

The average length of time between receipt of manuscripts and their publication decreased in 2017 compared with 2016 owing to articles being published online ahead of print. More than 48, 79, 91 and 98% of the manuscripts accepted for publication were published within 6, 8, 10 and 12 months of submission, respectively. The average time from submission to publication was 7 months, a 1-month decrease from previous years because of online ahead of print publication. The primary reasons for publication of articles more than 12 months following submission are delays by authors in revising manuscripts, reading proofs, or submitting appropriate paperwork.

The Journal of Food Protection continues to have an excellent worldwide reputation and appeal. Researchers from countries other than the United States authored 142 (54%) of the articles in Volume 80, a slight decrease from the 55% for Volume 79. Thirty-seven countries were represented by corresponding authors in Volume 80 including (number of articles in parentheses): China (26); Korea (15); Canada (13); Italy (11); Brazil (9); Japan and Spain (6 each); Australia, Mexico, and Portugal (4 each); India, Jordan, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tunisia, and the United Kingdom (3 each); Costa Rica, Greece, Pakistan, Poland, and South Africa (2 each); and Belgium, Burma, Chile, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Iran, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Slovenia, Sweden, and Thailand (1 each).

In Volume 80, there were 123 (46%) articles authored by researchers in the United States. Corresponding authors represented institutions in 31 states and the District of Columbia. The top U.S. states represented were (number of research articles in parentheses): Maryland (23); Illinois and Pennsylvania (12 each); Georgia (8); California and Wisconsin (7 each); Colorado, Indiana, and New Jersey (4 each); and Arkansas, Florida, North Carolina, Nebraska, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas (3 each).

Dr. Joseph Frank retired at the end of 2017, after serving 16 years as Scientific Editor of the Journal of Food Protection. The other Scientific Editors, Journal staff, and Executive Board of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) are grateful to Dr. Frank for his commitment, diligence, and service to the Journal and IAFP. On January 2, 2018, Dr. Joshua B. Gurtler from the U.S. Department of Agriculture began his tenure as Scientific Editor of the Journal of Food Protection.

The Editorial Board of the Journal ended 2017 with 159 members. In addition to the U.S. members, the Editorial Board included 52 international members representing Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Portugal, Qatar, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Members serve 3-year terms and many accept additional 3-year appointments. Anyone interested in reviewing manuscripts on an ad hoc basis or serving on the Editorial Board should make this interest known in a letter to one of the Editors, being sure to list their areas of expertise. Selection of new members is made in the third quarter each year and is based on technical expertise needed to balance the Board. The Scientific Editors deeply appreciate the hard work and dedication of the members of the Editorial Board. It is through their diligence and professionalism that the quality of the research reported in the Journal of Food Protection remains at the highest level. The Scientific Editors also wish to thank all of those individuals who volunteered as ad hoc reviewers for 2017.
