We are excited to introduce the Journal of Graduate Medical Education supplement, Reimagining Residency: An American Medical Association Initiative to Transform GME. This collection of projects reflects a broad range of innovations in residency programs from different geographic areas, small and large institutions, and many specialties. The projects in this supplement represent real-world applications of ideas that address pressing issues for trainees, program leaders, health care systems, and patients. Together, these projects can help you identify successful practical strategies that can apply to your specific circumstances—and learn from approaches that were less successful.
As you delve into the supplement, we challenge you to dispel the belief that “this can’t happen here.” Our purpose is to encourage readers to consider the possibilities for transformation in their own environments. We hope you will find an idea to catalyze reflection and encourage adaptation to fit your needs.
The American Medical Association provided grant support for Reimagining Residency projects. In addition to funding, these all started with a singular idea from a passionate educator, who gathered like-minded individuals into a team that convinced their institutions and external organizations to take a chance on their vision. In reviewing the supplement, we hope you will find inspiration and models for enacting change. We invite you to suspend skepticism, think creatively, and embrace the potential for transformation within your own sphere of influence.
