Plasmodium spp. are hemoparasites known to occur in wild and captive reptiles. Lizards are over-represented among the reptile orders for plasmodiid infections. As mosquitos are the vector for this protozoa, wild lizards are more susceptible. Four black and white tegus (Salvator merianae) from a captive collection presented in mid-winter with lethargy and anorexia. All animals were housed inside with controlled temperature and humidity. All 4 tegus were dehydrated and had signs of stomatitis. Fecal parasite testing was negative for all tegus. Blood counts for all animals showed thrombocytosis, leukopenia, toxic granulation of heterophils, and Plasmodium sp. within red blood cells. Two tegus had a high packed cell volume, while the remaining two were anemic. Tegus were treated with sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim at 25 mg/kg orally once daily for 21 days.
