For 25 years, Draper Laboratory has been active in the areas of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and multichip modules (MCM), using two separate laboratories. When these laboratories were constructed, cleanroom technology was in its mid-life cycle. To meet evolving R&D needs, the cleanroom facilities recently underwent a major renovation as described in this article.

FED-STD-209E, Federal Standard: Airborne Particulate Cleanliness Classes in Cleanrooms and Clean Zones. FED-STD-209 was canceled in 2001 and superseded by ISO 14644 Cleanrooms and associated controlled environments, Part 1: Classification of air cleanliness; and ISO 14644-2 and Part 2: Specifications for testing and monitoring to prove continued compliance with ISO 14644-1.
