Being a Black therapist during the Black Lives Matter movement, my work goes beyond the therapy couch. Last June, my clinical work continually involved the macro, meso, and micro systems. June 1, 2020, marked 3 days of ongoing protests and riots in Washington, DC, over the death of George Floyd. June 1, 2020, also marked my birthday and the 3rd day I would struggle to go to sleep and wake up to sounds of flash bangs, gunshots, and nonstop police sirens. This birthday was unique because the mayor of my residence in Washington, DC, would put an emergency curfew in place due to the ongoing race riots.
