Based on current COVID-19 trends, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is planning for the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act, to expire at the end of the day on May 11, 2023. The HHS' response to the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, remains a public health priority, but because of the whole of government approach to combatting the virus, HHS feels that the nation is in a better place in response than it was 3 years ago, and that the nation can transition away from the emergency phase.

On January 27, 2023, the National Board of Medical Examiners' (NBME's) Board of Directors elected new officers and members. Positions elected include chair, vice chair, and treasurer, along with 7 at-large members. This election was a historic moment for NBME, with Dr. Reena Karani elected as the first woman of color to serve as chair in the organization's 108-year history.

The Board of Directors is comprised of health care professionals and other leaders from both domestic and global institutions. This group directs NBME's policy and strategy; ensures advancement of the organization's commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion; appoints NBME's president and CEO; and reviews and approves NBME's budget.

With the advent of ChatGPT, a large language model developed by OpenAI, there have been growing conversations about the advancements of artificial intelligence (AI) programs and their intersectionality with medicine and medical education. Several studies have been conducted on the use of AI to answer multiple-choice test questions on medical knowledge.
