The 111th Annual Meeting (2014) of the North Carolina Academy of Science was memorable, not only for its unique venue, The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, but for bestowing the Academy's highest award, Honorary Life Membership, on Dr. Gerhard W. Kalmus. This award recognized Dr. Kalmus’ dedicated service for over 30 yr, during which time was an outstanding leader, great friend, and valued colleague.
His first attendance at an Academy annual meeting was in 1978, at which time he began his long-time leadership and service, initially as Secretary (and later as Chair) for the Cell and Developmental Biology section for the upcoming annual meeting. His contributions to the Academy would grow to include service in many offices and on numerous committees, including Past President, President (2002–2003) and President Elect, Secretary (1980–2000), Executive Secretary (2004–2012), Chair of the Robert R.
