Termeie DA. Periodontal Review Q&A. A Study Guide. Hanover Park, Ill: Quintessence Publishing Co, 2013.

This text is designed for individuals who are studying for the American Board of Periodontology (ABP) examination. However, this text is also an excellent review for those who desire to become Fellows or Associate Fellows of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) or Diplomates of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI/ID). The text consists of 19 chapters. All chapters are written in a question/answer format, which makes for easy reading and gets the candidate thinking in a test-like format. Suitable references are supplied to support the short essay answers provided by the authors.

Each of the 19 chapters' topics is relevant to implant dentistry, but 9 of the chapters are “must-knows” for the ABOI/ID and AAID Fellowship examinations. Some of the topics go into a greater depth than what is needed for the AAID Associate Fellowship examination. The chapters of particular interest are the following: Chapter 1: Evidence-Based Dentistry; Chapter 5: Pharmacology; Chapter 8: Occlusion; Chapter 12: Regeneration; Chapter 13: Implants; Chapter 14: Inflammation; Chapter 15: Oral Medicine; Chapter 16: Oral Pathology; and Chapter 18: Medical Emergencies. Chapter 13 (26 pages)—Implants, covers bone classifications, implant success criteria, implant failure factors, contraindications to implant therapy, antibiotic use, surface modifications, keratinized tissue concerns, implant placement, esthetics, immediate implants, and several other related topics.

I found the text to be well written and filled with multiple “must know” items for those preparing for Board examinations. The text also serves as a good review for all Implant Dentists whether they are studying for an exam or just keeping their knowledge base current.

I strongly recommend that this text be part of your implant library.
