Dr Carl Misch is a name known by every implant dentist in the world. The practices of all implant dentists have been impacted by Dr Misch's teachings, research, and/or writings. Many individuals and organizations have recently honored Dr Misch, and he certainly is on everyone's short list of those who have contributed significantly to the field of Implant Dentistry.

Journal of Oral Implantology (JOI) would like to salute Dr Misch for the volumes of literature he has contributed to our profession. Dr Misch has authored three editions of Contemporary Implant Dentistry,1  which has been translated into 9 languages including Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian, and Korean. Contemporary Implant Dentistry is the most popular book in dentistry. He has also written the well-received text Dental Implant Prosthetics.2  He has published over 250 articles dating from March 1979 to February 2015. Of these, 124 articles have been published journals indexed by PubMed. Dr Misch has 20 articles published in JOI. My favorite JOI publication of Dr Misch's is “Workshop Guidelines on Immediate Loading in Implant Dentistry”.3  This manuscript is the report of the “The Immediate Function Consensus Conference” chaired by Dr Misch on November 7, 2003, as part of the 52nd annual meeting of the American Academy of Implant Dentsitry. This conference and publication have been instrumental in progressing dentistry from the then standard 2-stage surgical protocol established by Branemark et al4  to the now frequently performed 1-stage or non-submerged implant protocol. This is just one of the many significant advances that Dr Misch has contributed to our profession.

Not only has Dr Misch made significant clinical advancements, but also has supported his innovations with research and given the necessary efforts to publish his work in peer-reviewed journals. What is astounding is that as busy as he is, he still finds the time to document his work. His work far exceeds that of one lifetime. Because of his efforts, patients and clinicians not only benefit today, but will benefit for generations to come. JOI congratulates and offers sincere appreciation to Dr Carl E. Misch for all he has done and is doing for Implant Dentistry. Dr Misch, thank you for choosing JOI for 20 of your publications.
