Laverne “Vern” K. Eveland loved life and was a good friend, indeed. He died on 12 May 2014, and here we celebrate his life. He was self-disciplined in his work ethic and possessed an unmatched sense of fairness. He enjoyed classical music, the opera, and good food. He was an avid naturalist and bird watcher and traveled extensively with his friend, Lee M. Cohen, Ph.D., M.D., to enjoy their mutual enthusiasm for bird life in many parts of the world.

Laverne Kent Eveland was born to Carlton and Grace Eveland on 7 October 1940 in Waverly, Iowa. He preferred to be called “Vern.” He was unpretentious and was well known for his great sense of humor.
