This person needs absolutely no introduction at ASP – he's a past president of the American Society of Parasitologists (ASP), a winner of the distinguished service award in 2008, as well as the creator of the most sought-after auction items every year—Dr. William Campbell. Bill was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, and did his undergraduate work at Trinity College. He then came to the United States and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Soon after graduation, he was hired by the Merck Institute for Therapeutic Research, where he rose to the position of senior scientist and director of assay research and development. While at Merck, Bill made many important discoveries, including a fungicide, thiabendazole, which is used to treat potato blight, the best-known scourge of his homeland.
