Fellow members of the American Society of Parasitologists (ASP) and guests, it is my immense pleasure and distinct honor to introduce to you this year's Henry Baldwin Ward Medalist, Dr. John M. Hawdon. As most of you are aware, this distinction is awarded each year to a member of the society in recognition of her or his outstanding contributions to the field of parasitology and who, by self-directed investigations, has attained a position of leadership in some aspect of parasitological research.

I have known John for 23 yr. I first met John in Atlanta in 1993, at my very first ASP meeting, where I noticed that he demonstrated an unexpected proclivity for socializing with systematists such as myself.
