Eugene Lyons unexpectedly passed away 7 December 2017 from an apparent heart attack while engaged in field research activities at the equine farms of the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He was 86 years old. He was born 6 May 1931 in Yankton, South Dakota, and served in the United States Coast Guard (1950–1953) following his graduation from high school in 1949. He received a B.S. degree in Wildlife/Zoology/Agriculture in 1956 from South Dakota State University and an M.S. degree in Zoology from Kansas State University in 1958. Gene began his academic career at the University of Kentucky as an assistant professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathology where he worked from 1958 to 1960. With significant urging from his former M.S. mentor, Dr. Merle Hansen, he returned to graduate studies at Colorado State University and earned his Ph.D. in Zoology (Parasitology) in 1963.
