Many thanks, Dr. Hawdon, for that very kind and generous introduction. I am honored and humbled to be selected as this year's Bueding and Von Brand Lecturer. This lectureship is designated for a scientist who has made major research contributions to the field of biochemistry, molecular biology, and/or pharmacology of parasitic helminths and is named for Ernest Bueding, who could rightly be called an originator of modern anthelmintic chemistry, and for Theodor von Brand, arguably the father of parasite biochemistry and the author of a seminal textbook that remains a standard in this field to this day. I, by contrast, am a latecomer to this field of molecular parasitology, being self-taught, for better or worse, in most of its basic tenets. Likewise, my friends and colleagues who have been past Bueding and Von Brand Lecturers, Rick Komuniecki, Tim Geary, Richard Martin, and Aaron Maule, to name a few, are true...
